Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has called on African governments to ban Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, from visiting the continent following her controversial remarks about Nigeria.

Badenoch, who has Nigerian roots, reportedly described her upbringing in Nigeria as being overshadowed by insecurity and corruption. Her comments have drawn criticism from Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima and others, who argue that she has unfairly denigrated the country.

Adding to the controversy, Badenoch has been accused of defending colonialism, allegedly suggesting that African nations owe reparations to Europeans for colonialism—an assertion that has sparked outrage.

In an Instagram live session, Seun Kuti slammed Badenoch, accusing her of disrespecting Africa and its ancestors. He said: “Many have been praising this woman [Kemi Badenoch]; someone who has been insulting us, not only us but our ancestors. She said we should pay Europeans for colonialism.”

Kuti went further, urging African leaders to take action: “She’s someone who should be banned by African governments from stepping into Africa. Once she steps into Africa, she should be jailed.”

This incident underscores the tension between diaspora Africans and those on the continent, as differing perspectives on colonial history and modern governance continue to surface.

As debates rage on, many are waiting to see if Badenoch will address the backlash or if African governments will take any action in response to Kuti’s fiery demand.
