Nollywood star Mercy Aigbe is calling for fair treatment after claiming that cinemas are discouraging fans from watching her new movie, Thin Line. Despite receiving glowing reviews since its December 13 premiere, the film has faced alleged sabotage in several locations.
Taking to Instagram, Aigbe shared fan complaints detailing their experiences at cinemas. One fan recounted visiting two theaters, only to be met with excuses like “faulty screens” and “non-functional air conditioning” when they tried to see Thin Line. Shockingly, the fan was redirected to watch another movie instead.
Actor Jamiu Azeez echoed these claims, sharing his encounter at Maryland Mall. According to Azeez, cinema staff actively warned patrons about AC issues in the Thin Line hall, which he believed was a tactic to dissuade viewers. “I had to personally convince people to stay and watch the film,” he said.
Aigbe expressed disappointment but maintained her optimism. “As an investor, these setbacks are tough, but I’m encouraged by the positive feedback from those who have watched the movie,” she said.
The actress’s post has sparked a wave of support from fans and colleagues, who have called for more transparency and fairness in how Nigerian films are handled by cinemas. Many in the Nollywood community see this as part of a larger issue regarding support for local filmmakers.
Despite the challenges, Thin Line continues to attract attention, with viewers praising its storytelling and performances. Aigbe remains determined to push forward, urging fans to support the film and ensure that Nigerian cinema thrives.
