Nollywood actor and filmmaker Femi Branch has taken a bold stand against what he describes as favoritism in Nigerian cinemas, accusing operators of unfair practices that hinder the growth and diversity of the industry.
In a video shared on social media, Branch alleged that certain films are given preferential treatment over others, including the removal of promotional materials for some movies to spotlight select productions. He also claimed that cinema staff actively persuade patrons to watch specific films, creating an uneven playing field for filmmakers.
The actor further criticized the disproportionate allocation of screen time, noting that some movies enjoy extensive showings while others struggle to secure a spot on the schedule. According to him, these practices undermine fair competition, limit audience choice, and negatively impact producers’ returns on investment.
“If you accept a film, give it its promised time slot, even if only two people show up,” Branch said, emphasizing the importance of honoring contractual agreements to ensure equity in the industry.
He urged fellow filmmakers to break their silence and address these issues collectively, warning that ignoring such practices could lead to long-term damage to Nollywood. Branch also called for a collaborative effort among industry stakeholders to foster transparency and create a supportive environment for all filmmakers.
