Renowned actor and two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington has added a new title to his illustrious life: Minister. At 69 years old, the celebrated star has received his minister’s license, marking a transformative chapter in his journey.
Washington was baptized by Archbishop Christopher Bryant at Kelly Temple in New York City, a moment that Bryant described as deeply moving. Reflecting on his decision, Washington shared: "It took a while, but I’m finally here… If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit."
Bryant celebrated the occasion in a Facebook post, writing: "We celebrate the addition of Minister Denzel Washington into the clergy, having received his minister’s license in the Church of God in Christ today, in a truly uplifting moment."
Washington has been vocal about his faith and the challenges of discussing religion in Hollywood. In an interview with Esquire, he said: "When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I’ve been given by my Lord and Savior. I’m unafraid. I don’t care what anyone thinks."
The actor also highlighted the cultural barriers to openly talking about religion in the industry: "You can’t talk like that and win Oscars. You can’t talk like that and party. You can’t say that in this town. But I’m free now."
While Washington acknowledges the spiritual beliefs of some in Hollywood, he dismisses the idea of a unified faith-based community in the industry: "There’s no such thing called Hollywood anyway. What does that even mean? That to me means a street called Hollywood Boulevard. I don’t know how many other actors have faith. There’s no Church Actor Meetings I’ve been to."
