A Lagos commercial driver is reportedly on the run after setting both his bus and a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer ablaze in an attempt to evade arrest in the Mile 2 area on Tuesday.

The LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a statement, detailing the shocking events that have since gone viral on social media.

The driver, who was operating a Volkswagen T4 bus with license plate LSD 355 CK, was initially stopped by LASTMA officers for alleged traffic violations.

According to Taofiq, when LASTMA officials attempted to make the arrest, the driver and his assistant reacted aggressively, spraying petrol on the officers and their own bus before igniting it.

“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has been made aware of a distressing video showing the driver setting both his vehicle and LASTMA officers ablaze in a brazen attempt to evade arrest,” Taofiq stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

The officer who sustained severe burns was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care, while the driver and his conductor escaped the scene. LASTMA officials have vowed to pursue legal action and bring those responsible to justice, as they reiterated the agency's commitment to maintaining order on Lagos roads.

"The agency strongly urges all commercial and other drivers to comply fully with traffic regulations. LASTMA will not condone any form of violence or intimidation,” Taofiq warned, stressing that strict action would be taken to deter similar incidents in the future.
