Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has come to the defense of Afrobeats superstar Davido, who recently sparked controversy over his comments about Nigeria’s economic situation during an appearance on the US-based podcast, ‘The Big Homies House.’
Davido had remarked, “It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” advising Black Americans against relocating to Nigeria. While his blunt assessment drew criticism from many Nigerians, Kanayo argued that Davido was exercising his right to free speech and highlighting the plight of ordinary citizens.
In a video shared on Instagram, Kanayo urged critics to respect Davido’s perspective, emphasizing that the singer’s privileged background does not blind him to the struggles of average Nigerians.
“@davido spoke his mind, isn’t it? Respect his views too. The Adelekes can feed for life, but it will be unholy if they assume all is okay because they are OK,” Kanayo said.
“Make una leave Davido alone over the comment he made. It is freedom of speech, and he made the statement in good faith. It is left for those in power to work harder to give us a better Nigeria.”
Kanayo dismissed calls for an apology, asserting that criticism often stems from a desire for positive change.
“Some people say he should apologize—for what? Those who criticize us want the best out of us. Davido speaks for other Nigerians who cannot feed.”
Kanayo’s defense has reignited the debate surrounding Davido’s remarks, with fans and critics sharing their thoughts online.
