Amid a wave of high-profile departures from Twitter, actress Gabrielle Union has announced her decision to leave the platform, citing dissatisfaction with its evolving policies and climate.
The move comes in the wake of controversial updates to Twitter’s terms of service and the fallout from Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election.
The move comes in the wake of controversial updates to Twitter’s terms of service and the fallout from Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election.
Union shared her decision in a heartfelt open letter on Friday, November 15, stating:
"There are pivotal moments in life when we must declare that enough is enough – and for me, today is that day. Platforms like [Twitter] were founded on authentic connections, true engagement, and creative expression, all anchored in respect for user privacy and trust. Yet, with the recent and upcoming changes to the terms of service – and the return of volatile figures – I find myself at a crossroads, facing a direction I can no longer fully support."
The Cheaper by the Dozen star thanked her followers for their support and encouraged them to connect with her on other platforms like Instagram and Threads.

Union isn’t alone in her departure. On Wednesday, November 13, journalist Don Lemon also bid farewell to the platform. In a video message, he shared his reasons, stating:
"I once believed it was a place for honest debate and discussion, transparency, and free speech, but I now feel it does not serve that purpose."
Union and Lemon’s decisions reflect a broader trend. Following the election outcome and Twitter’s shifting landscape under Elon Musk, alternative platforms like Bluesky and Threads have seen significant growth. According to NBC News, Bluesky gained over 1 million users in November, while Threads surpassed 275 million monthly active users.
As Twitter faces criticism for reintroducing divisive figures and implementing controversial policies, its competitors are rapidly becoming havens for users seeking more inclusive and respectful online spaces.
