Award-winning British-Nigerian presenter and actress, Simi Drey, has dropped a bombshell about her decision to call off her engagement, despite her ex-fiancé being neither abusive nor unfaithful.
During a candid conversation on the WithChude podcast, Simi opened up about the societal pressures surrounding marriage and her resolve to prioritize her happiness over conforming to expectations.
"I Wasn’t 100% Fulfilled or Happy"
Simi shared that although her relationship seemed fine on the surface, she felt a deep sense of apprehension.
“My ex and I didn’t have a perfect relationship. He never cheated, never was abusive. But you know when you are not 100% fulfilled or happy. Marriage is heavily emphasized here, especially for women. Even though my parents never pressured me, my friends would constantly ask, ‘When will you get married?’”
She revealed how her mother subtly voiced concerns when she announced her engagement.
“When I told my mum, she said, ‘Simi, don’t do this.’ She could sense my apprehension, even though I tried to convince myself everything was fine.”
Despite trying to make things work, Simi ultimately realized that the relationship wasn’t what she wanted.
“Two months later, I told my fiancé we needed to work on our relationship first before thinking about marriage. A month later, I realized I didn’t want to marry him. I wanted to marry with worth, not just for the title.”
Her decision was met with backlash, but Simi stood firm in her resolve.
“I received criticism from people around me, but I had to be truthful to myself. Being single and happy is better than being married and miserable. If I do not feel respected, or if a man feels superior to me because of his title or finances, it’s a no.”
