In a bizarre and dangerous turn of events, a local herbalist, Ismail Usman, from Kuchibuyi Village in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sustained life-threatening injuries after a failed experiment with a self-made “bulletproof” charm.

The incident, which took place on November 23, 2024, has drawn widespread attention and criticism.

What Happened?

According to the FCT Police Command, Usman fired a shotgun at his abdomen to test the potency of his homemade charm. The charm, meant to render him invulnerable to bullets, failed spectacularly, leaving him critically injured.

A distress call by a local, Shandam Michael, alerted the police, who arrived at the scene to find Usman bleeding profusely.

Swift Police Response

Officers from the Byazhin Division transported Usman to Kubwa General Hospital, where he received emergency treatment. He was later transferred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for further care.

During a subsequent search of his residence, police recovered the homemade shotgun and a variety of charms believed to be part of the ill-fated experiment.

Legal Consequences Await

The FCT Police Commissioner, Olatunji Disu, condemned the reckless act, highlighting the dangers of illegal firearms and irresponsible behavior. Usman now faces possible charges for unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide under the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria, Section 231.

Police Statement

The FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, emphasized the importance of community vigilance and condemned the incident:

“This situation illustrates the serious risks of engaging in reckless behavior. We strongly advise the community to avoid such dangerous practices.”

Social Media Reactions

The incident has sparked amusement, shock, and criticism online, with Nigerians weighing in on the bizarre occurrence:

@eze_laughter: "This herbalist wanted to turn Marvel’s Black Panther but failed woefully."

@temi_onpoint: "The charm might not be bulletproof, but it’s definitely consequence-proof—because wow."

@blessedbygrace: "Let’s pray he survives. This is tragic and unnecessary."
