Renowned gospel singer Sinach is facing a ₦5 billion lawsuit from music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye, over alleged copyright infringement involving her 2016 global hit song, "Way Maker."
Maye has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Lagos, claiming co-authorship and ownership of the widely acclaimed song. In court documents, he is seeking a declaration of his rights and demanding ₦5 billion in general damages for what he alleges to be the cumulative infringement of his intellectual property.
The case, numbered FHC/L/CS/402/2024, is the latest high-profile copyright dispute to shake the Nigerian music industry.
Sinach, whose music has gained global recognition, denied the claims of shared authorship. She maintains that she is the sole writer and creator of Way Maker, a song that has earned her international acclaim and remains a staple in worship music worldwide.
“I achieved global recognition before Way Maker,” she asserted, emphasizing her established reputation and track record as a songwriter.
The trial, which began on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, has been adjourned to January 29 and 30, 2025, allowing both parties to present further arguments and evidence.
The lawsuit has sparked mixed reactions, with some fans rallying behind Sinach, citing her longstanding credibility as a gospel artist, while others are calling for fairness in recognizing contributions to creative works.
Way Maker is one of the most successful gospel songs to come out of Nigeria, covered by numerous international artists and featured in major worship compilations worldwide. The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for copyright disputes in the music industry.
Stay tuned for updates as this case unfolds. What’s your take—does Maye have a claim, or is Sinach’s sole authorship undeniable?
