Veteran actor Denzel Washington has weighed in on the challenges of living in the digital age, expressing his concerns about the negative effects of social media on younger generations.
In a candid discussion on a podcast with actor Paul Mescal, Washington reflected on how different life was during his youth, emphasizing that the constant scrutiny and pressures of social media weren’t factors he had to contend with.
“I pray for your generation because we did not have to deal with what you’ve to deal with. It’s our fault to put it in your hands,” he said, acknowledging the role of older generations in creating and popularizing these platforms.
Washington pointed to the overwhelming number of opinions on social media as a major issue.
“There were no nine million opinions every moment of my day, people that liked you then suddenly they hate you. You don’t understand why,” he remarked, highlighting how the volatility of online feedback can distort self-perception.
The Oscar-winning actor revealed he has chosen to stay off social media entirely, saying, “I never had an Instagram account and LinkedIn.”
Washington’s critique has sparked a conversation about the pressures faced by younger generations and the role of technology in shaping modern social interactions.
