Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked controversy over his candid remarks on the state of Nigeria’s economy during a recent appearance on The Big Homies House podcast.
Addressing speculations about black Americans considering relocation to Africa following the election of Donald Trump as U.S. President, Davido advised against moving to Nigeria, citing the nation’s economic challenges.

“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” Davido said, a comment that has drawn significant criticism from Nigerians.
Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed his disappointment via Facebook. Referring to Davido as his "in-law," Igbokwe urged the singer to retract his statement, stating, "Nigeria made Davido. QED!!!"
Similarly, Bashir Ahmad, former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, labeled the remarks “disappointing” and “unpatriotic.” Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ahmad wrote:
“Selling out your country from foreign soil is so disappointing and unpatriotic. Public figures like Davido should know that. They should act and be seen as good ambassadors for Nigeria wherever they find themselves. @NOA_Nigeria.”
While some Nigerians criticized Davido for allegedly tarnishing the country’s image abroad, others defended his remarks as truthful, arguing that his statements reflect the realities of the nation’s economic struggles.
Davido, a globally recognized Afrobeats icon, has yet to respond to the backlash.
