Nigerian actor and comedian Seyi Law has publicly expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu's decision to remove the fuel subsidy, calling it a much-needed step for the country’s future, despite the current economic challenges it has caused.
Seyi Law, known for his humorous takes on societal issues, took a more serious tone in a recent interview, insisting that the fuel subsidy should have been scrapped years ago. Reflecting on past protests, he emphasized that if the removal had happened during Goodluck Jonathan's presidency in 2012, when opposition leaders (including Tinubu) were against it, Nigerians would have already overcome the hardship.
“Fuel subsidy should have been long gone. If it had gone in 2012, we would have gone through the pain process, and by now, we would have been healing,” he stated. Seyi Law also recalled being one of the few celebrities back in 2012 who took the stage to oppose the movement against fuel subsidy removal, while Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, then Minister of Finance, highlighted the dire economic strain the subsidy had placed on the nation.
The comedian’s comments have sparked debates, with many applauding his long-term perspective on the subsidy issue, while others still express concern over the current cost of living crisis.
Looks like Seyi Law is not just cracking jokes but also stirring serious conversations on Nigeria’s economic future.
