A fiery online feud erupted between Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti and activist Aisha Yesufu as they clashed over women’s liberation, identity, and cultural loyalty.

The dispute took a heated turn after Seun criticized Yesufu’s advocacy for women's rights, questioning her commitment due to her choice to wear a hijab. Kuti argued that a true dedication to liberation should start with embracing African identity, calling her adherence to Islamic dress a “symbol of cultural distance.”

“Liberate yourself from that before advocating freedom for others,” Seun challenged, implying that religious symbols cloud genuine advocacy for African women’s autonomy.

Unfazed, Yesufu fired back, accusing Seun of using her name to seek relevance, especially due to his outspoken personality. She referenced her own activism legacy, underscoring their differences by invoking their contrasting family backgrounds.

In a cutting remark, she referenced his legendary father, Fela Kuti, saying, “If his father had shown restraint, maybe Seun wouldn’t be in this position today.”

As their clash continued across social media, fans and followers joined the conversation, with some supporting Seun’s emphasis on cultural authenticity while others praised Yesufu’s unapologetic response.

The public spat between two high-profile figures on sensitive topics such as religious identity and African heritage has ignited discussions and left audiences divided over whose viewpoint holds the most weight.
