In the ongoing investigation into alleged bribery involving crossdresser Idris Ogunleye, popularly known as Bobrisky, officials from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have disclosed new details about his incarceration.
Micheal Benson, the NCoS officer in charge of the Kirikiri Medium Security Facility, revealed on Monday during a House of Representatives hearing that Bobrisky was not kept in the general cell due to his "special features," which are feminine in nature.
Micheal Benson, the NCoS officer in charge of the Kirikiri Medium Security Facility, revealed on Monday during a House of Representatives hearing that Bobrisky was not kept in the general cell due to his "special features," which are feminine in nature.
Benson explained that the decision was made for Bobrisky’s safety, citing concerns about placing him in the general population alongside convicted rapists and sodomites. “Bobrisky has some special features like breasts. If we put him in the general cell, you would have to bring out his body from the cell," Benson stated during the hearing.
To further ensure Bobrisky’s safety, he was later transferred from the Medium Security Facility to the Maximum Security Facility. Benson clarified that the decision was made in his absence by a superior officer, but it was deemed necessary given the risks involved.
This development comes as the House of Representatives continues its investigation into allegations that NCoS and EFCC officials accepted bribes—allegedly totaling N15 million—to provide Bobrisky with special privileges during his six-month sentence. Bobrisky, who has yet to appear before the panel, is accused of receiving preferential treatment, raising concerns about corruption within Nigeria's correctional system.
While Bobrisky did not attend Monday's hearing, lawmakers have ordered him to appear before the panel at a later date, further intensifying the public's interest in this high-profile case. As the investigation unfolds, questions surrounding the integrity of the NCoS and EFCC remain front and center.
