In a bold move aimed at promoting transparency and accountability, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has inaugurated an independent investigative panel to probe the alleged bribery involving popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, and staff members of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).
The panel, inaugurated on Monday, comes in response to a leaked audio recording that surfaced last week, in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed that his influential "godfather" helped him avoid serving his six-month jail sentence in Kirikiri prison, Lagos. The recording has sparked a national outcry, with many questioning the integrity of the correctional system.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the panel, led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Magdalena Ajani, is essential to sanitizing the NCoS and addressing allegations of corruption within the service. “We want to really reform the correctional service," the minister stated, adding that the investigation will focus on allegations of corruption, torture, and mistreatment of inmates by correctional officers, with a special emphasis on the Bobrisky case.
“We will rely on your legal guidance to ensure that whatever we do is in line with the law of the land,” Tunji-Ojo continued, assuring Nigerians that no one, regardless of their status or influence, will be shielded from scrutiny.
The panel is expected to release its findings in two weeks, offering a clearer picture of whether any corruption was involved in Bobrisky’s case. With heightened public interest in the outcome, this investigation could lead to broader reforms in Nigeria's correctional system.
