American billionaire Bill Gates has contributed $50 million to the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris, marking a significant shift in his long-standing reluctance to engage in political donations.
This contribution is reportedly a private donation to a non-profit organization that is backing Vice President Harris in her presidential bid, as revealed by three sources familiar with the situation. Initially, the donation was intended to remain confidential.
While Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft, has not formally endorsed Harris, this substantial donation indicates a notable change in his approach to political contributions, which he has typically avoided in the past.
According to reports, Bill Gates has privately shared his worries with friends and others about the potential implications of a second Donald Trump presidency during calls this year. Despite these concerns, he stated that he would be open to collaborating with either candidate.
Although Gates does not have a close relationship with Vice President Kamala Harris, he has praised the Biden-Harris administration for its efforts in addressing climate change.
Gates's philanthropic organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is particularly apprehensive about the possibility of reductions in family planning and global health initiatives should Trump be re-elected.
Bill Gates has reportedly contributed to Future Forward, the primary fundraising organization backing Ms. Harris, as confirmed by sources familiar with the situation.
Gates has discussed his support for Harris with colleagues, including Mike Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City and a significant supporter of Future Forward, who has contemplated making a donation of a similar magnitude, according to two sources.
Gates' contribution was directed to Future Forward's nonprofit division, Future Forward USA Action, which operates as a 501(c)(4) "dark money" organization and is not required to disclose its donors, as noted by the sources.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Gates expressed his support for candidates who show a strong dedication to enhancing healthcare, alleviating poverty, and addressing climate change both in the United States and globally.
“I have a long history of working with leaders across the political spectrum, but this election is different, with unprecedented significance for Americans and the most vulnerable people around the world," he added.
