South African singer Tyla has voiced her concerns about the Western tendency to label all African music as Afrobeats. While accepting her award for Best Afrobeats Song at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night, Tyla highlighted the issue of misrepresentation.
In her acceptance speech, the Amapiano star acknowledged the doors Afrobeats has opened for African music globally but emphasized that Africa's musical landscape is far more diverse.
“The impact that ‘Water’ has had on the world proves that African music can be pop music too,” Tyla said. “But it’s bittersweet because there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats.”
She added, “I come from South Africa, I represent Amapiano, and I present my culture. African music is so much more than just Afrobeats.”
Tyla also praised fellow Afrobeats stars in the same category, including Tems, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Rema, and Lojay, acknowledging their contributions to African music's global success.
