Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has boldly claimed that every new Afrobeats artist to emerge since 2019 has followed the template he created.
Speaking during a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, the Ozeba crooner said his entry into the music industry marked a turning point, particularly with the introduction of the Extended Play (EP) format, which he believes set the stage for how new artists now debut their careers.
“When I came into the game, I brought a template. The way new artists come and dominate, mine was different. I started the EP trend. Every [new Afrobeats] artist since 2019 walked on that path like when you come out, you popped out with an EP,” Rema stated.
He added that while many may argue against his claim, he feels compelled to speak up since others in the industry might be reluctant to acknowledge his influence.
“A lot of people would argue [my innovation in Afrobeats]. I don’t like to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself.”
Rema's bold statement has sparked conversations among fans and critics alike, further solidifying his place as one of Afrobeats' leading voices.
