Popular Nigerian On-Air Personality (OAP) Do2dtun has harshly criticized South African singer Tyla following her acceptance speech at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), where she won Best Afrobeats Award.
Tyla, who was nominated alongside Nigerian heavyweights Tems, Ayra Starr, Davido, and Burna Boy, expressed displeasure with the grouping of all African artists under the Afrobeats genre. She emphasized that she is primarily an Amapiano artist and not an Afrobeats musician, despite the genre's growing global influence.
Reacting to her remarks, Do2dtun called out Tyla in a series of posts on his X handle, accusing her of hypocrisy for accepting an award in a category she claims doesn't represent her music.
He wrote, "Aunty @tyla aka I am not Afrobeats, I am Amapiano. We have heard you, but your song 'Water' is not Amapiano either. If you thought you were categorized in a wrong category, you should have given the award back or denounced the nomination."
