Veteran Nollywood actor, Patrick Doyle, has voiced his criticism of the trending phrase “I am a Chosen,” commonly chanted by members of The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries. The phrase has recently become a hot topic on social media, particularly after a series of viral testimonies from the church sparked controversy.
In a Facebook post, Doyle described the phrase as “nonsensical” and argued that it is not a true reflection of Christian doctrine. He expressed concerns about the focus of the chant, suggesting it is more about worshipping the church's General Overseer (GO) than Jesus Christ.
Doyle wrote, “The phrase ‘I am a Chosen,’ used by members of the religious sect called ‘Chosen,’ should never be connected to the Body of Christ. The members of this sect don’t have Jesus in mind when chanting the phrase. Their adoration is unequivocally directed at a man, their GO. The phrase does not mention or imply Jesus in any way.”
He added that associating the phrase with the Christian faith “is to make a mockery of our faith.” Doyle also noted that content creators and bloggers who use the phrase in their posts are not mocking the Christian Church but rather the sect and its founder.
This follows a broader backlash from various celebrities, including actor IK Ogbonna, who recently urged the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to address the rise of “fake miracles” in churches. Actress Kemi Lala Akindoju also weighed in, criticizing the church’s doctrines.
In its response, CAN condemned the viral testimony of a congregant who claimed that “an angel” provided her with exam answers, further fueling the debate over the church’s teachings and practices.
