In her statement, Mrs. Igiebor revealed that she had been bearing significant challenges in her marriage for years and felt compelled to take a stand for herself.
She emphasized that her actions were not the result of sudden irrationality but a culmination of unresolved issues that she had endured for a long time.

"The issue has been going on for a very long time, I have just been dancing to the tune till I arrived in my motherland, Nigeria, and I did what I did," Mrs. Igiebor explained. She urged those who judged her based on the short clip to consider the broader context and the years of sacrifice and suffering she had endured in the marriage. "I have gone through many things. When it gets to your neck, you have to act."
She also noted that she chose to tear the passport in Nigeria, rather than in Europe, to avoid causing her husband more stress. "I didn’t want to make him go through a lot of stress, that’s why I waited till we got to Nigeria to do it rather than Europe where I could have done it."
The incident has drawn the attention of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), which announced that it is investigating the matter. The NIS indicated that Mrs. Igiebor's actions could potentially violate Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), which prohibits the willful destruction of Nigerian travel documents. The law outlines specific penalties for such offenses, and the outcome of the probe will determine if any legal action will be taken.
As the situation unfolds, Mrs. Igiebor's statement highlights the complex dynamics that can underlie seemingly inexplicable actions, reminding the public to consider all aspects before passing judgment.
