Grammy-winning American gospel singer Kirk Franklin recently voiced his concerns about how certain concepts, including marriage, giving, and sexuality, have been weaponized within Western Christianity.

Appearing on the Funky Friday podcast, the My Life Is In Your Hands singer discussed how these concepts have been twisted in ways that make many people believe they are following God's will, when in fact, they are adhering to man-made doctrines.

Kirk Franklin highlighted how societal pressures and religious dogma have led to harmful expectations, particularly around marriage. He pointed out that in many Christian communities, especially in the Black community, single women over a certain age are often judged harshly, as if their worth is diminished by their marital status.

“Any woman listening to this can attest in our culture: ‘Don’t be no 30, 35 single black woman and go to the family reunion.’ All the older women are going to look at you and be like, ‘Why are you not married?’” Franklin said, noting the dysfunctional nature of these societal messages.

He also criticized the idea that being married is a prerequisite for ministry or God's favor, explaining that some people rush into marriage under the false belief that it is necessary for their spiritual purpose. “You can be single and be used by God. You can be single and have purpose. Being married is not a prerequisite for God’s hand in your life. It’s not. But we’ve weaponized it,” he added.

Franklin's comments have sparked discussions about the pressures placed on individuals within religious communities and the ways in which these pressures can lead to superficial and harmful decisions. His critique of these practices calls for a deeper understanding of faith that goes beyond rigid societal expectations.
