Popular Nigerian rapper Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, known professionally as Ruggedman, has opened up about his reasons for withdrawing his support for controversial self-proclaimed activist VeryDarkMan.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Echoo Room podcast, Ruggedman expressed his concerns over VeryDarkMan's recent actions, particularly his invasion of people's private lives.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Echoo Room podcast, Ruggedman expressed his concerns over VeryDarkMan's recent actions, particularly his invasion of people's private lives.
Ruggedman initially supported VeryDarkMan when he focused on issues like the enforcement of NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) numbers for products, a campaign aimed at ensuring public safety. However, Ruggedman noted that the activist's approach has since shifted in a direction he finds troubling.
"I liked VeryDarkMan in the beginning when he started with the whole NAFDAC number thing, but when he started going personal into people’s private lives, especially with women, that to me, he is just distracting himself," Ruggedman explained.
He compared VeryDarkMan's methods to those of a policeman using lethal force as a first resort, suggesting that as a public figure, VeryDarkMan should exercise more restraint and professionalism in addressing conflicts. Ruggedman emphasized that while holding people accountable is important, doing so by attacking their personal lives is counterproductive.
Ruggedman specifically mentioned VeryDarkMan's recent involvement in controversies with Nollywood actresses Iyabo Ojo and Tonto Dikeh, as well as Iyabo Ojo's daughter. He pointed out that these personal attacks have overshadowed the activist's earlier work, which focused on consumer protection.
Reflecting on the situation, Ruggedman suggested that VeryDarkMan's approach may have alienated supporters and drawn negative responses. "You can’t say something like that and not expect people to respond. So he started it. That’s what I meant by people’s private lives," Ruggedman concluded.
