The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in South Africa has released preliminary findings from an investigation into the nationality of beauty queen Chidinma Adetshina.
Chidinma, a model with Nigerian roots, recently faced controversy regarding her eligibility to compete in the 2024 Miss South Africa pageant. Her parents reportedly met in Johannesburg in the late '90s before settling in Pimville, but questions arose about her citizenship after she advanced to the round of 16.
South Africa's Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, announced on Monday that an investigation was launched following official requests from the Miss SA organizers to verify Chidinma's citizenship. On Wednesday, the DHA shared a video and statement suggesting that Adetshina's mother might have committed fraud and identity theft.
"Based on the information we have gathered so far, there is a prima facie reason to believe that fraud and identity theft may have been committed by the person recorded in Home Affairs records as Chidinma Adetshina’s mother," the statement read.

The DHA clarified that Adetshina, who was an infant in 2021, could not have been involved in her mother's alleged illegal activities. Unfortunately, the alleged fraud has also impacted an innocent South African mother whose identity may have been stolen in the process, preventing her from registering her own child.
