Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has announced that the newly planned 6,000-capacity Edo Arena will be named in honor of global afrobeats sensation, Rema.

The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony of the project in Benin City on Wednesday, where Rema himself was present to lay the first block of the arena.

The governor expressed his pleasure in having Rema, a proud ambassador of Edo State, join him for the ceremony. He shared the news via X, stating, "It was a pleasure to have our global music icon @heisrema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City."

Governor Obaseki highlighted the significance of the Edo Arena, noting that once completed, it will host a variety of events, including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings. He emphasized that the arena will attract more visitors to Edo State, showcasing the region's rich culture and creating employment opportunities for local youth.

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has been an active promoter of Edo State and the legacy of the ancient Benin empire through his music. His latest hit song, "Benin Boys," which features fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, is a tribute to his hometown.

The naming of the Edo Arena as ‘Rema’s Dome’ serves as a recognition of the artist's global influence and his contributions to promoting Edo State on the world stage.
