Jaruma, once celebrated as Nigeria’s leading sex therapist with extravagant fees reaching up to N1 million for in-person consultations, revealed during a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) forum the tragic story of how she fell into drug addiction.
Speaking at the NDLEA's X space event titled “Drug Dependence: Addressing the Fear of Stigmatization in Recovery and Overcoming the Demon of Drugs and Stigma: A Survivor’s Story,” Jaruma disclosed that her addiction was triggered by influences from a well-known Lagos plastic surgeon, Dr. Anu, and a close friend.
Speaking at the NDLEA's X space event titled “Drug Dependence: Addressing the Fear of Stigmatization in Recovery and Overcoming the Demon of Drugs and Stigma: A Survivor’s Story,” Jaruma disclosed that her addiction was triggered by influences from a well-known Lagos plastic surgeon, Dr. Anu, and a close friend.
Her descent began innocently enough, with a friend introducing her to marijuana. But the situation quickly spiraled out of control, leading to encounters with more potent substances. Jaruma recounted how her rapid rise to fame and the pressures that came with it led her to make dangerous choices, eventually culminating in a life-altering encounter with Dr. Anu.
Jaruma described how Dr. Anu offered her an injection, promising it would help her sleep and forget her problems. The injection, however, led to severe addiction and health complications.
As her dependency on drugs grew, Jaruma found herself sinking deeper into despair, culminating in a moment where she contemplated suicide. She recounted a near-fatal incident in which she injected herself with multiple doses of drugs in a desperate bid to end her life. Miraculously, she survived but faced a long and challenging road to recovery.
