Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer Ololade Ahmed, popularly known as Asake, has opened up about his decision to predominantly sing in Yoruba.

During a recent interactive session with fans on Instagram, the Omo Ope hitmaker explained that while he is fully capable of singing in English, he feels more comfortable and authentic expressing himself in his native dialect.

Asake candidly addressed those who may have issues with his linguistic choices, stating, "I am more comfortable singing in Yoruba, it’s not that I can’t sing in English. If you fvck with me, fvck with me with my Yoruba. If not, then don’t." His statement underscores his commitment to staying true to his cultural roots, even in the face of global success.

All three of Asake’s albums—Mr Money With The Vibes (2022), Work of Art (2023), and his latest release Lungu Boy—feature lyrics predominantly in Yoruba.

Despite this, Asake's music has transcended language barriers, with his hit song Amapiano earning a nomination in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards.

Although the song, sung mainly in Yoruba, lost to South African singer Tyla’s viral hit Water, Asake's impact on the global music scene continues to grow, further solidifying the influence of indigenous languages in mainstream music.
