Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe recently opened up about his challenging journey into the movie industry, revealing a significant career setback in 2012 when he was dismissed by Etisalat Nigeria, one of the country's leading telecommunications companies at the time.
In a candid interview with media personality Chude Jidenonwo, Uzor recounted the difficult period in his life when he was let go from his job while anticipating a promotion from specialist to manager. As the team lead, he took responsibility for an unspecified incident in his department, leading to his dismissal. “I was fired sometime in 2012. Something happened in my department. I was heading the team at the time. Then something happened I had to take the fall as the leader,” Uzor explained.
After losing his job, Uzor faced a year-long struggle with unemployment from November 2012 to November 2013. Despite his efforts to break into Nollywood, he received no calls for movie roles and had to settle for low-paying gigs. “The only gig I got between 2012 and 2013 when I got my second job was some stage drama. Seyi Babatope got me the gig. That was the only gig I got between November 2012 when I was fired till December 2013,” he said.
Reflecting on this tough time, Uzor shared how the dismissal affected him deeply. “They stripped me of everything that makes you think you have a job. It was one of the hardest things ever,” he admitted. Despite the adversity, he persevered, eventually finding a job again and continuing his corporate career for another five years.
However, Uzor’s passion for acting never waned. In 2018, he made a decisive move to pursue his dream full-time. “I left my company in April 2018 and got my first gig with Iroko on August 28, 2018. At this time, I was broke, busted down, and had no money. It was so bad that I was saying prayers at noon,” Uzor recounted.
His persistence paid off, and he began to secure more roles in the industry, marking the start of a successful acting career. Uzor’s story is a testament to resilience and determination, showcasing how setbacks can lead to new opportunities and growth in unexpected ways.
