Amidst the escalating economic hardships faced by Nigerian citizens, controversial singer Portable has sparked outrage by dismissing the planned nationwide protest as unnecessary.
The protest, scheduled between August 1 and 10, 2024, aims to address the soaring cost of living under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The protest, scheduled between August 1 and 10, 2024, aims to address the soaring cost of living under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a post shared on his Instagram story on Thursday, Portable argued that the protests are pointless and labeled those planning to participate as jobless. The singer warned against being asked to perform during the demonstrations, attributing the motivation behind the protests to laziness.
Portable stated, “It won’t be well with anyone who tells me to perform during the protest. Don’t you have a producer too? You should also collect the mic and join the protest too.”
He further added, “Please, I need money, I’m hustling. If you take your job seriously, you won’t join the protest. Don’t fight for Nigeria, fight for yourself."
The singer continued his tirade, asserting that Nigeria is not the problem, but rather individuals who fail to make the necessary connections and put in the effort to succeed. “Nigeria is okay, you are the one who is not okay. There is money in some places, you are the one who did not hustle or not loyal to your helper. You are the one who doesn’t make connections. There are people who can help, there are jobs. You are the one who is not working. Fight for yourself,” Portable said.

His comments have elicited a strong reaction on social media, with many criticizing his insensitivity to the plight of ordinary Nigerians struggling to cope with the rising cost of living. The planned protests are seen by many as a necessary step to demand better economic policies and support from the government.
As the debate over the protests continues, Portable's remarks have added fuel to the fire, highlighting the divide between those who feel the need for collective action and others who believe in individual hustle and perseverance.
