The Nigerian Government, through the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has responded to calls for the ban of a controversial yet-to-be-released film featuring actress Nancy Isime.
Nollywood Times reported yesterday that MURIC calls for the ban of the movie due to the blasphemy Nancy Isime portrayed wearing Hijab. However, the stellar actress reacted by stating that no one could bring her down.
The film, which has sparked significant backlash, includes a poster showing Isime wearing a niqab while participating in a robbery.
The niqab, a long garment worn by some Muslim women to cover the entire body and face, excluding only the eyes, is considered a symbol of modesty and religious devotion.
The portrayal of the niqab in a criminal context has been condemned by many Muslims, including the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), who have labeled the film as "satanic" and urged the NFVCB to ban it.

In a statement issued on Friday, the NFVCB clarified the current status of the film and its position on the matter:
"The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), the statutory regulatory agency for film and video works as well as exhibition and distribution in Nigeria, has received complaints about an upcoming Nigerian movie that associates the Hijab, an outfit attributed to Muslim women that symbolizes modesty and religious devotion, with negative moral vices.
"Our check revealed that the movie has not been released, and it has not been submitted for classification as required by law and our mandate.
"However, we have been able to reach the producers of the film and have taken steps to address the concerns raised with the producers.
"We restate that as a classification agency, we will not overlook any movie or video works, including skits that abuse, denigrate, or undermine religious, cultural, and ethnic sensibilities.
"We commit to contributing to the positive transformation of Nigerian society through the classification of video and film works, while balancing the need to preserve freedom of expression within the law and limit cultural, social, and religious harm caused by films."

The NFVCB emphasized that the film is still in production and has not yet undergone the mandatory classification process. The agency assured the public that it would take appropriate measures to ensure that the film, upon submission, aligns with cultural, social, and religious standards.
This statement aims to address the outcry and reassure the public that the NFVCB is committed to upholding the integrity of religious and cultural symbols while supporting the freedom of expression within the bounds of the law.
