French rapper Naps, whose real name is Nabil Boukhobza, is set to face trial for allegedly raping a woman while she was asleep in 2021. This decision was confirmed by an investigating magistrate, despite the rapper's strong denial of the charges.
Naps' lawyer, Nabil Boudi, stated that they have appealed the order for a trial in Paris, which was filed on May 15. "We have appealed the order for a trial in Paris, which was filed on May 15," Boudi told AFP on Wednesday.
The allegations against Naps originated from a criminal complaint filed by a young woman in October 2021. She claimed that after spending an evening with the rapper and friends at a bar in Paris, they moved to a hotel room where his friends gradually left. The woman alleged that she fell asleep and later woke up to a sexual act she did not consent to.
"The young woman had fallen asleep when one of them says she was woken up by a sexual act she did not consent to," prosecutors said.
Naps was subsequently charged with rape later that month and placed under judicial observation. It took until February this year for prosecutors to request a trial, which has now been approved.
Naps gained widespread recognition in 2021 with the release of his hit track "La kiffance," which has garnered over 186 million views on YouTube. He has also collaborated with other major French artists, including the global star Maitre Gims.
While the trial date has yet to be set, Naps' legal team is gearing up to defend him vigorously against the allegations. The case has attracted significant media attention, given Naps' prominence in the French music scene.
