MultiChoice Nigeria has announced its intention to appeal a ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja, which imposed a N150 million fine on the pay-TV company for challenging the court’s jurisdiction.
The fine was levied after MultiChoice was found in contempt for disobeying an order that restrained it from increasing its monthly subscription rates pending the resolution of a suit filed by Abuja-based lawyer Festus Onifade.
The fine was levied after MultiChoice was found in contempt for disobeying an order that restrained it from increasing its monthly subscription rates pending the resolution of a suit filed by Abuja-based lawyer Festus Onifade.
The tribunal not only fined MultiChoice but also mandated that the company provide its Nigerian customers with a one-month free subscription to its DStv and GOtv packages as compensation for the disruption.
In response, MultiChoice Nigeria issued a statement expressing its disagreement with the tribunal's ruling and confirming its plan to appeal the decision. The company stated, “MultiChoice Nigeria is aware of the recent ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal regarding its jurisdiction to entertain a price regulation matter. We disagree with the ruling and will therefore file an appeal against the said ruling.”
The statement further emphasized that due to the ongoing legal proceedings, MultiChoice is limited in the comments it can make about the case: “As the matter is currently sub-judice, we are restrained from making further comments.”
This development follows a period of contention between MultiChoice and the tribunal, centered around the pay-TV company's attempt to increase subscription prices despite legal orders to the contrary. The appeal process will determine the next steps in this ongoing legal battle, with MultiChoice seeking to overturn the tribunal's decision and defend its pricing strategy.
