Kate Henshaw Criticizes Reinstatement of Old National Anthem Amidst National Hardship

Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has expressed her disapproval of the current administration's decision to reinstate Nigeria's old national anthem, "Nigeria We Hail Thee." Henshaw's criticism comes in the wake of President Bola Tinubu signing the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law on Wednesday.

Taking to her X handle, Henshaw questioned the timing and relevance of the change, highlighting the severe challenges facing the country. She pointed out that Nigeria is grappling with "excoriating hardship and lack of good governance on every level," suggesting that the anthem change does little to address these critical issues.

In a sarcastic tone, Henshaw wrote: “In the midst of excoriating hardship & lack of good governance on every level but not to worry, going back to a colonial anthem will be a soothing balm and inject patriotism back into our veins, a much needed drug.”

In a follow-up post, she lamented the perceived neglect of the sacrifices made by past heroes, writing, “The labour of our heroes past… o ti lo [is gone].”

Henshaw's comments reflect a broader frustration among Nigerians who feel that the government's priorities are misplaced. Many citizens are struggling with economic difficulties, insecurity, and a perceived lack of effective governance. The decision to revert to the old anthem has been seen by some as a symbolic gesture that fails to address the root causes of the nation's problems.

Other celebrities, including comedian Igosave and singer Joeboy, have also voiced their concerns, urging the government to focus on improving the economy, security, and overall living conditions. Their collective voices highlight a growing demand for substantive action rather than symbolic changes.

As the debate over the national anthem continues, it underscores the need for the government to listen to its citizens' concerns and prioritize measures that will bring tangible improvements to their lives.
