Comedian and activist Mr. Macaroni has tackled Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu hard, following Gbajabiamila's remarks labeling social media as a societal menace that requires regulation.
Speaking at a book launch in Lagos state on Thursday, February 8, Gbajabiamila expressed concerns about the impact of social media on society, advocating for regulatory measures to address what he perceives as a growing problem.
In his words; “Social media has become a societal menace and must be regulated. As many people do not understand that once the send button is hit, there is a potential to reach millions of people around the world which is capable of causing a great danger not just in the society but even unintended consequences to the individuals that are receiving information which may include security of life.”Watch Femi speak below:
Femi Gbajabiamila's stance on social media regulation received mixed reactions, with some voices backing his views while others, notably including popular skitmaker Mr. Macaroni, strongly disagreed.
Mr. Macaroni further fueled the controversy by sharing screenshots of Gbajabiamila's past tweets from 2014, where he criticized previous governments. This move added an additional layer of scrutiny to Gbajabiamila's position, highlighting potential inconsistencies in his statements regarding governance and freedom of expression.
He wrote: “Social Media wasn’t a menace when Mr Gbajabiamila used it to address the Government as Vagabonds and Barbarians in 2014. Today he is Chief of Staff and he suddenly realizes that Social media is a menace…. HYPOCRITICAL VAGABONDS IN POWER AND BARBARIANS AT THE GATE!!!!.”
In another Tweet, Mr. Macaroni put up different screenshots of Gbajabiamila's old tweets and captioned:
“Mr @femigbaja
This was you when Social Media was sweeting you.
It is evident that you and this accidental and desperate government of yours regard Nigerians as Imbeciles!! Well we are not!!! The people are suffering!!!
Fix up and put an end to this ridiculousness!!!!”
