Nigerian singer Peter Obaje, known by the stage name Benue Boy, has raised concerns about the state of the Nigerian music industry, asserting that it has transformed into a cartel business.
According to him, artists who are not associated with any confraternity find it challenging to succeed in the industry.

Benue Boy made these claims during a podcast episode titled "Encounter with Chris J." His remarks shed light on the perceived influence of certain affiliations within the Nigerian music scene and suggest that success in the industry may be influenced by factors beyond talent and creativity.
Such observations and comments from artists reflect the ongoing discussions about the dynamics, challenges, and potential obstacles that individuals may encounter while navigating the Nigerian music industry.
Benue Boy said, “The challenges I see in the music industry, I think people see this modern industry as a cartel kind of thing. That is, if you don’t belong to a confraternity or group, you cannot scale through to the next level.“A politician once sponsored my trip to Ghana. Someone wanted to sign me in there but there were clauses attached to the deal. And they told me that if I didn’t agree to the clauses, they wouldn’t sign me. And I didn’t want to do something that would take me away from my reality.
“Somebody offered me a deal of $29,000 in Ghana but I rejected it because it was gonna sink my life.
“I think a cartel is controlling the music industry and this is not helping the young ones,” he said.
