Renowned singer Charles Chibueze Chukwu, widely known as Crayon, recently opened up about his humble beginnings in an interview with Saturday Beats. He discussed the inspiration behind the title of his album, 'Trench to Triumph,' and emphasized that it reflects his journey from challenging times to his current success.
Crayon candidly shared that he used to sell fruits in the busy traffic of Lagos, showcasing the hard work and determination that have driven him to where he is today in the music industry. His album's title serves as a reminder of his journey and the progress he has made, resonating with many who appreciate his rise to triumph from a challenging background.
“We moved from Orile Iganmu (Lagos) to a ‘face-me-I-face-you’ apartment in Ojo when I was seven years old. We were about nine or ten people sharing a room.
“As the first child of my parents, I faced a lot of financial struggles while growing up. I was sent home regularly from school because of unpaid fees, and I ended up taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) five times.

“I was working on my music at that time and also helping my mom at the market where she sold fruits. Sometimes, I would even hawk the fruits in traffic.
“Going from that kind of life to being signed by Mavin Records, and on my way to becoming a global superstar is my triumph. I used to be in the trenches and now I am triumphant.”
