The Yobe State Police Command has reported the arrest of a 25-year-old man named Lawan Saidu.
Saidu, a resident of Tudun Wada in Potiskum Local Government Area, was apprehended for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.
The Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, issued a statement on Tuesday, providing information about the incident.
According to the statement, the suspect had previously been involved in an inappropriate relationship with the victim's mother.
“The victim reported the menace to her father which eventually led to the divorce of the mother.
“The suspect became wild and developed interest towards the victim and then decided to transfer his aggression on her by attacking her in the house after her father left for his shop on 20th September 2023 at about 2030hrs”, he said.
According to a police spokesperson, the suspect allegedly raped a 13-year-old. The spokesperson also mentioned that an investigation is currently underway at the State CID in Damaturu, and once completed, the suspect will be prosecuted.
The spokesperson, Abdulkarim, further stated that the victim has received medical treatment and has been discharged from the hospital.
In the meantime, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Garba Ahmad, has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to the nearest police station.
The Commissioner also emphasized the need for stricter penalties for rapists and instructed the officers and personnel of the Command to conduct thorough investigations and ensure the diligent prosecution of offenders.
“Justice should not only be done, but be seen to have been done”, the Commissioner of Police, added.
