President Joe Biden has confirmed that at least 11 Americans have lost their lives in the ongoing violence in Israel, which erupted following a surprise attack by Palestinian militants.

In a somber statement, President Biden expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic deaths, attributing them to an "appalling terrorist assault against Israel." The President also voiced concerns that American citizens may be held captive by the Hamas militant group and affirmed that the U.S. is collaborating with Israel to address the hostage situation.

President Biden emphasized the personal connection between the United States and Israel, stating that the ties run deep, and many American families are profoundly affected by this attack.

“This is not some distant tragedy,” the President said in his statement.

“The ties between Israel and the United States run deep. It is personal for so many American families who are feeling the pain of this attack,” the President added.

The identities of the deceased Americans have not yet been disclosed, and it remains uncertain whether any of them were New York residents, a city with a substantial Jewish population.

In response to the escalating violence, heightened security measures were observed at synagogues in New York City, while major U.S. airlines canceled flights to and from Israel. Rep. Grace Meng's office reported that over 50 New York residents were seeking to return from Israel on Monday.

The State Department is actively engaged with the families of the deceased Americans, offering support during this distressing time. The conflict in the region has already claimed more than 1,300 lives, with Israel launching a retaliatory assault on the Gaza Strip, resulting in casualties on both sides.

The Israel Defense Forces have reported at least 700 deaths in Israel, while the Palestinian Health Ministry has recorded 687 Palestinian fatalities.
