Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, recently shared her experiences of facing rejection in the film industry during her early days. Akindele revealed that she lost out on significant movie roles because people considered her "not fine" or unattractive.
In a conversation on the TokeMoments podcast, hosted by Toke Makinwa, Funke Akindele discussed how her appearance affected her career as a struggling actress. She recounted that this perception of her looks led to her being denied prominent roles, even in Yoruba indigenous films.
Akindele expressed her gratitude to fellow actress Iyabo Ojo, who came to her aid on multiple occasions when she encountered difficulties with filmmakers who rejected her based on her physical appearance. During this challenging period, she often received only minor roles, which left her feeling disheartened.
“I remember people telling me, ‘You are not fine. You don’t have ass. You don’t have boobs. You will not be in this film,” she recalled.
“And, I remember crying. A lot of times I would cry, break down, get into the bathroom and cry.”
