PEPT judgement: We’re here for troublemakers – Asari Dokubo

It is deeply concerning to see someone like Alhaji Asari Dokubo, a Niger Delta leader with a history of militancy, openly supporting President Bola Tinubu amidst allegations of electoral misconduct. This situation raises serious questions about the integrity of the Nigerian electoral system and the influence that powerful figures like Dokubo can exert.

Dokubo's assertion that the petitions against Tinubu lack substance and are frivolous is alarming, as it implies a dismissal of due process and accountability. In any functioning democracy, allegations of electoral misconduct should be thoroughly investigated and adjudicated, regardless of the political affiliations involved.

The fact that Dokubo and his group, the Ijaw Youths for BAT, are collaborating with other organizations like the National APC Supporters Centre and the Northern Youths Network for Asiwaju further highlights the potential for political manipulation and undue pressure on the judicial process.

Ultimately, the credibility of any democratic system depends on its ability to ensure fair and transparent elections, as well as impartial investigations into allegations of misconduct. It is crucial that the Nigerian authorities and judiciary handle this case with the utmost care and adhere to the principles of justice and accountability, regardless of the public demonstrations and political pressures.

“We are here to show our presence in court. We know that the case will be decided in our favour. The case is frivolous; they don’t have any substance in it. But if you don’t come, they will come here and start to misbehave. And that is why we came. You have seen the overwhelming majority (pointing to members of his group); you can’t find them anywhere,” he said.

He added: “President Tinubu has been with me in my most trying period, and this is the time for me to pay him back.”

When asked what he would do if the outcome of the judgement did not favour his candidate, Dokubo simply said: “We know our case, and we know that it will go in our favour.”

He said whichever way the pendulum of the judgement swings, “all Nigerians should come together and work for the good of the country.”
