The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through the House of Representatives, has taken significant steps to address the issue of late singer Mohbad's royalties and rights pertaining to his music and lyrics.

This initiative was set in motion following the adoption of a motion by Representative Babajimi Benson (APC-Lagos) during the resumed plenary session held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Representative Benson, in his motion, highlighted the tragic and mysterious passing of Mohbad on September 12, an event that has captured national and international attention. He underscored the widespread protests and processions by youths, who have been demanding an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the artist's death. These protests have been accompanied by tribute concerts with the participation of numerous musicians.

Benson emphasized that Mohbad, also known as Imole (meaning "light" in Yoruba), was known for his music promoting peace and positivity. He pointed out that Mohbad had left his record label, Marlian Records, owned by Azeez Fashola (popularly known as Naira Marley) in 2022, citing issues such as unpaid royalties among his grievances.

The lawmaker noted that Mohbad's case is indicative of a more extensive problem within the industry, where artists often struggle to assert their rights. This situation, he argued, revealed the prevalence of exploitative contractual agreements and mistreatment of young artists in Nigeria.

Benson stressed that many artists find themselves locked into unfavorable contracts that limit their creative freedom and financial growth, sometimes leading to disputes and even violence. He pointed out that the lack of substantial institutional funding within the Nigerian music industry often pushes artists into such unfair contracts with record labels.

Addressing this issue is seen as crucial for the industry's overall growth and sustainability. The House of Representatives expressed concern that a significant portion of Mohbad's earnings was going to the Marlian Music Group, and there had been no effort from any agency to safeguard the late artist's estate, despite him being ranked as the 46th best-selling digital artist globally.

To address these concerns, the House observed a minute of silence in honor of Mohbad and called for the protection of the rights of promising young artists locked in contractual agreements with record labels. They also called for a thorough investigation into Mohbad's death, particularly regarding allegations of harassment and unpaid royalties.

The House further urged the Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC) to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including record labels, artists, legal experts, and industry associations, to develop and implement industry-wide guidelines. These guidelines aim to ensure fair treatment, transparent contractual agreements, and proper compensation for artists. Additionally, the House mandated its Committee on Justice and Legislative Compliance to oversee compliance with these measures, including a review of existing copyright and contract laws in Nigeria for potential reforms.
