Tobi Amusan cleared to compete in World Championship

It was celebration galore yesterday when the news came that the World Athletics cleared Tobi Amusan to participate in this month’s world championship in Budapest, Hungary.

There was an initial fear that the Hurdles Queen would not have the chance to defend her 100m hurdles crown at the championship.

However, all fears were allayed today when the world governing body for athletics included Amusan in the list of Nigerian athletes that will compete at the tournament.

However, whether the 26-year-old will be able to participate depends on her ability to successfully overcome the anti-doping rule violation charge lodged against her by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

Last month, Amusan faced a provisional suspension from the AIU due to her failure to complete three drug tests. Nevertheless, the Nigerian athlete opted to challenge the charge.

The World Championships remains the only competition Amusan has not had the opportunity to defend after she successfully defended her Nigeria, African Championships, African Games, Commonwealth Games and Diamond League titles.

The 2023 World Athletics Championships will hold from August 19 to 27.
