Lauren James, the England midfielder, will not be able to participate in any further matches of the 2023 Women's World Cup due to her red card received in match against Nigeria.
In the 70th minute of the game, James was sent off for stamping on Michelle Alozie. Initially, the referee showed her a yellow card, but after consulting the VAR on-pitch monitor, the decision was changed to a red card.
Despite playing with 10 players for the entire extra time, England managed to win the match 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out.
However, James will be suspended for three matches due to her violent conduct, effectively ending her World Cup campaign.
FIFA rules state: “A player will be suspended for at least three matches for violent conduct; at least three matches or an appropriate period of time for assault, including elbowing, punching, kicking, biting, spitting or hitting an opponent or a person other than a match official”.
England now has only three matches to play having qualified for the quarter final.
