Netflix: 10 Hot Nollywood Movies and TV Shows you should watch Qtr 1 2023 ends [Video]

As we look forward to the 2023 General Elections, there are some fantastic movies released on Netflix that are Nigerian that you must watch. We are approaching the weekend and the end of the month of February, ensure you watch the movies listed because they promise nothing but absolute entertainment.
 
We bring you some Nollywood movies and TV shows on Netflix that you should watch. From period drama to comedy and thriller, there are so much more to sink your teeth onto. Here are some beautiful films that should be part of your watchlist.
 
Anikulapo
 
It is a story of a traveller named Saro, who finds his way to Oyo in search of greener pastures where he finds favour and things begin to change for good. Unfortunately, he found love in a forbidden place, longed for the abominable, and eventually got caught in the web of lust. His illicit affair with the king’s wife, Arolake leads to his untimely death and encounter with Akala, a mystical bird believed to give and take life.
 
It has a runtime of about 2 hours and 22 minutes & stars Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Sola Sobowale, Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Taiwo Hassan, Faithia Balogun, Adebayo Salami, Kareem Adepoju, Moji Olayiwola and Aisha Lawal.

Far From Home
 
Far From Home shows a financially struggling teen who finds himself in the world of luxury after a prestigious scholarship sends him to an exclusive school for the one per cent. The series is created by Damilola Elebe and Chinaza Onuzo and stars Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Mike Afolarin, Elma Mbadiwe, Adesua Etomi, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Bimbo Akintola.
 
There are five episodes in the series with an average runtime of thirty-five to fifty minutes. The show was well received by the audience as they want to see more of such content coming out of Nollywood.

All Na Vibes
 
Set against the backdrop of a crippling university strike and an undercurrent of political unrest, three out-of-school teenagers- Abiola, Lamidi and Sade grapple with varied existential crises on what’s next with their lives. Lamidi’s impulsive desire to plan a house party to lighten the mood forces the three together.
 
Sade goes missing after the party and the involvement of Sade’s father, a local party chieftain, and the aggressive police force reveals a dark side to Lamidi and tests the friendship and trust the boys share.

Aki and Paw Paw
 
In this 2-hour and 12 minutes long film, Aki and Paw Paw relocate to the vibrant city of Lagos, and two troublesome brothers search for social media fame after crossing paths with a powerful influencer. They are a famous Nollywood acting duo and have worked in the Nigerian film industry for over two decades, playing the comic roles of siblings and close friends.

Namaste Wahala
 
Starring Ini Dima-Okojie and Ruslaan Mumtaz in a cross-cultural film, where after a chance encounter on the beach, they fell in love and wouldn’t let anything stop them from being together, not even their significantly different cultures and opposing parents. In this, an interracial romance hits humorous and heart-wrenching hiccups as the couple’s parents fight tooth and nail against their relationship.

Shanty Town
 
Based in a small town in Lagos named Shanty Town, the show follows the trajectory of the sex workers, who want to make it out of the chaotic shuffle, and find a new life outside the drug cartel. The series further projects the hardships of their lives, and their eventual attempt to beat the odds.
 
This Nigerian thriller stars Ini Edo, Chidi Mokeme, Nancy Isime, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Peter Okoye and Richard Mofe-Damijo, among other cast members. It has six episodes, each ranging from 30-45 minutes.

The Wait
 
The Wait follows the lives of different individuals and families as they try to navigate the disappointments and obstacles of life while waiting for their moment in the sun. The film stars Nse Ikpe-Etim, Deyemi Okanlawon, Kate Henshaw, Joke Silva, Jimmy Odukoya, Chimezie Imo and Meg Otanwa. It is based on God’s Waiting Room, a faith-based book written by prominent Nigerian lawyer Yewande Zaccheaus.

A Naija Christmas
 
While Christmas might have just passed, there are no rules on watching theme-based films only in December. Therefore, here’s a Nigerian Christmas film directed by Kunle Afolayan and starring Abayomi Alvin, Kunle Remi, Efa Iwara and Rachel Oniga.
 
It tells the story of an ageing mother who is distraught because her sons have refused to get married and give her grandchildren. She challenges them by offering the first son to marry her Ikoyi house as his inheritance, setting off fierce competition between her sons.

Blood Sisters
 
It is the first Nigerian Netflix Original series, starring Ini Dima-Okojie and Nancy Isime in the lead, with Ramsey Noah, Kate Henshaw, Wale Ojo, Kehinde Bankole, Deyemi Okanlawon, Gabriel Afolayan, Tope Tedela among other cast members. The synopsis of the four-part series reads, “Bound by a dangerous secret, best friends Sarah and Kemi are forced to go on the run after a wealthy groom disappears during his engagement party.”
 
Sarah is engaged to her dream man, Kola, however, their seemingly idyllic union has a dark side – Kola is a physically abusive and controlling fiancé. Despite Kemi’s vocal misgivings, Sarah is determined to press on with the wedding. On the day of the traditional engagement ceremony, tragedy strikes, unintentionally setting off a catastrophic series of events, finding both women on the run.

Coming From Insanity
 
Starring Gabriel Afolayan, Damilola Adegbite, Dakore Akande, Wale Ojo and Bolanle Ninalowo, it follows the story of a Nigerian boy who was trafficked and sold into servitude and grows up to be a master US currency counterfeiter – and the target of a government agent determined to bring him to justice. It is said to be based on the true story of Kossi the bear.
