Thursday witnessed the sentencing of the rapist and murderer Uduak Akpan by an Akwa Ibom State High Court. He has been standing trial for the murder of Iniubong Umoren.

He was convicted of rape and murder of the Akwa Ibom job seeker and sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Bassey Nkanang.

As the judge read the sentence to the convict (the first accused in the murder case), pandemonium was at the court premises. Akpan caused the chaos; on hearing the sentence read by the judge, he tried to escape.

However, the pro-activeness of the police officers at the court foiled the escape attempt by Akpan.

The convict was handed a death sentence by hanging and life imprisonment on the two-count charge of murder and rape.

Consequently, the court discharged and acquitted Frank Akpan, the convict’s father, and Anwan Bassey, the convict’s sister, who was named 2nd and 3rd accused persons in the case. The two persons were standing trial for accessory after the fact of murder.

Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo, was killed on April 2021 by Akpan. She was a job seeker waiting for NYSC mobilization.

Akpan put up a strong defense, saying he was ready to die if found guilty. However, he recounted the confession days later and confessed to committing the crime.

He claimed that he was defending himself against Iniubong before he killed her. She claimed that the victim allegedly accepted his proposition for consensual sex, but later she turned and attacked him.

“When I met her, I asked her whether she would like to work on a hard drug farm, and she agreed,” Akpan said. “When we got to the house, I asked her for sex, and she agreed and insisted I use condom.

“It was when I tried to remove the condom that she picked up the stabilizer and hit me, and blood was coming out of my head.

“At that point, I grabbed the stabilizer and hit her, trying to make her submit peacefully. It was not my intention to kill her, but if at the end of everything I am found guilty, I am ready to also die.”
