The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu, has been told to resign as Chairman of the party to end the hostility between PDP presidential flagbearer Atiku Abubakar and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to end. Sam Ohuabunwa, a chieftain of the party on Tuesday, made the call on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
When he was elected Chairman of the party last year, the embattled Chairman reportedly agreed to resign if the PDP chose a Northerner as a presidential candidate.
However, after Atiku won the presidential ticket, Ayu was expected to honour his word and vacate the seat for a Southerner as part of the efforts to massage zoning considerations within the party. Moreover, Ayu has maintained that he has no intention of resigning.
“I see him [Ayu] as a man of honour,” Ohuabunwa said.
“If that is what he said, then he should follow the path of honour.
“Even if he didn’t say it, if he is the leader of the party who has brought us to this point, he should make the sacrifice. Do what needs to be done and make sure Nigerians are happy with PDP, members of PDP are happy.
“If he needs to step down for that to happen, he should do so. We need to unify the party.
“This party is bleeding right now,” Ohuabunwa added.
