It was a sweet victory Sunday night as the Falcons thumped Burundi 4-0 to progress to the quarter-final of the Women Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON.

It has been the apprehension of missing out on the qualification before the match after the Falcons lost their opening match against South Africa. The Falcons shut the mouth of their critics with the 4-0 convincing win over Burundi.

Rasheedat Ajibade scored the first goal from the penalty spot 25 minutes into the first half after being fouled by Burundi’s goalkeeper, Jeanine Irakoze when Rasheedat brilliantly wanted to round her.

The goalkeeper was substituted for 16-year-old Amissa Inarunkundo because the clash with Rasheedat left her injured.

The 16-year-old did not give a good account of herself as she conceded two quick goals no thanks to the back line breakdown.

Peace Efih in the 28th minute stabbed the ball into the net for the second goal, and after scoring, she did the iconic ‘Cristiano Rolado’s SIU’ celebration.

Uchenna Kanu, based in Mexico, made it 3-0 before half-time.

After the three goals, the Super Falcons started playing confidently, wasting many chances until the half-time whistle was blown.

Immediately the half-time commenced it was just one minute after that the fourth goal came from Uchenna Kanu, making it two goals for her and four for Nigeria. The goal came from a brilliant and unselfish assist by Ajibade.

The match continued with Falcon creating chances but could not finish, and it ended 4-0 in favour of the nine-time African champions.

As a result of the match, Falcons finished second behind South Africa, who defeated Botswana 1-0. Nigeria will now play Cameroon in the quarter-final for a place at next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
