The rate of kidnapping of Catholic priests today is rising, and it’s like a new trend among kidnappers. At about 5:15 p.m. on Friday, two Catholic priests were abducted by gunmen after they arrived at Christ the King Catholic Church, Yadin Garu, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna. The two priests have been identified as Fathers Donatus Sulaiman and John Chietnum.
Emmanuel Okolo, the Kafanchan diocese counselor, released a statement which said the priests were kidnapped at the rectory of Christ the King Catholic Church, Yadin Garu, in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State after they arrived there on an assignment at 5:15 p.m.
Mr Okolo solicited earnest prayers from all Catholics and well-meaning Nigerians for the safe release of the two priests. He also called on “all and sundry” to refrain from taking the law into their hands.
Kidnapping for ransom is growing unchecked in the country, and Catholic priests have become the worst hit in this act of terrorism, especially in Kaduna and Edo states.
Between 2nd July and 4th of July, at least four Catholic priests were abducted. They include Udo Peter and Philemon Uboh (kidnapped in Edo State on 2nd July); Luigi Brena, an Italian priest (kidnapped on 3rd July in Edo State) and Emmanuel Silas (kidnapped in Kaduna on 4th July).
However, the priests were later released allegedly after payment of ransom.
Unfortunately, in late June, two Catholic priests kidnapped both in Kaduna and Edo states were both killed, as reported by our source.
