The Super Eagles of Nigeria home based, have failed to qualify for the 2020 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), after losing 4-3 to the Hawks of Togo on aggregate.
The Nigerians had lost the first leg 4-1 to the Togolese in Lome on September 22, and needed a clear three-goal win to progress to the 2020 CHAN, but fell just short of pulling through.

Sikiru Alimi had given the Eagles a ninth-minute lead to set the tone for the day’s outing. However, the team would live to rue the numerous missed opportunities as they went into the break having scored just a solitary goal.

Alimi, who had been guilty of missing several scoring opportunities in the first half, got his brace in the 62nd minute to get the Eagles within one goal of making the trip to next year’s CHAN. However, they would fail to get the all-important third goal as the Togolese Hawks managed to hold on to end the contest 4-3 on aggregate.

This will be the third time Nigeria will miss the CHAN tournament, having missed the first two editions in 2009 and 2011, but came third in their debut appearance in 2014. They, however, exited at the group phase in 2016.
The tournament holds in Cameroon between January and February next year.
